Signs of a Spinal Cord Injury
Symptoms of a spinal injury depend on several issues, like the location along the spinal cord (the neurological level) and the severity of the injury (the injury’s completeness). If you have some motor or sensory function below the affected area, it’s considered incomplete, if not, it’s complete.
Paralysis is referred to as tetraplegia or quadriplegia (arms, hands, trunk, legs and pelvic organs are all impacted) and paraplegia (affecting all or part of your chest, legs, and pelvic organs).
Spinal cord injury symptoms show themselves in many ways, including:
- Lost movement
- Loss or altered sensation, such as heat, cold and touch
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
- Exaggerated reflex activities or muscle spasms
- Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility
- Pain or intense stinging feelings due to harm to nerve fibers in your spinal cord
- Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing your lungs
There currently no effective treatments to recover the permanent, lost function of the spinal cord though some spinal injuries are temporary. Emergency treatment focuses on keeping the accident victim alive and trying to prevent the injury from worsening.
Long term, you may take several medications, have surgeries performed and engage in extensive rehabilitation.
